Teaching a child art is observing their progress and offering them new methods of exploration.
1. Scribble Stage : Children aged 1-3 years old are engage in drawing with no connection made between the marks and representation during most of the scribble stage. This stage is of a child’s life, teaching will be limited to providing space, time, tools, and encouragement.
2. Pre-schematic Stage : Children aged 3-4 years old begin to see connections between the shapes that they draw with the physical world around them. Circles and lines may be described as representation. It is in this stage that a child first makes the connection of communicating through their drawings. Here Avoid pushing children to change style or approach, and do not offer criticism or correction. Rather, encourage, observe, and ask open-ended questions that will help a child-artist see and imagine more details and possibilities.
3. Schematic Stage : Children aged 5-6 years old assign shapes to objects that they are attempting to communicate. They often have developed a schema for creating drawings. There is a defined order in the observation and development of the drawing. Here we start teaching using the element of art how lines develop into shapes, shapes develop into forms, forms are given dimension using colours & textures and how given space is divided to achieve composition
4. Drawing Realism Stage: Children aged 7-9 years are beginning to become more critical of their own work. A schema is still used to create drawings, it is more complex than the schema used in earlier stages. Overlapping can be seen and a sense of spatial relationships is more evident. Here we start teaching the principle of designs & colour theory for composition. We encourage exploring genres of art. Different types of art materials available are used for experimental artwork in medium & textures.
5. Pseudo-Naturalist Stage : Children aged 10-12 years become critical of their own success. Success is determined by the level of realism achieved in the drawing. Frustration is a common occurrence. It is exceptionally important to encourage students at this stage. The use of value and light is now apparent in drawings. Here we start teaching a child new skills, such as drawing from observation, practicing perspectives, and drawing correct proportions. The technical aspect of art & design mutually surrounds the creative communication.
1. Motor Skills : Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children.
It’s important to expose kids to different methods of doing art. After they’ve experimented with different techniques, they will eventually ask for the ones they like the most.
It’s extremely important to art activities open-ended because we don’t want to stifle children’s individual creativity. Children have their own thoughts and ideas of how things should look and they come to art with their own unique experiences. Open-ended experiences are success-oriented because there’s no one right way to do something. Open-ended art activities are motivating for children of all developmental abilities. They build feelings of independence, confidence and an eagerness to learn.
Art can be used as an opportunity to understand what a child is feeling. Many times you can tell what’s going on in a child’s life just by the colors they use or by the things they draw. It’s a great way to spark conversations. Kids will open up when it comes to art and that can lead to discussions about other things.
In 2006, Komal Ullal ( BFA Painting, MFA Mural Painting, ATD Photography & Interior Decoration), initiated the class on a premise set by her Guru “Art is Eternal. Knowledge received should be given back to the Universe”. Since then, UAF has made it’s name for quality training & excellent results. UAF is highly acclaimed by various International/National Competitive Art Association Awards. The Art Syllabus is uniquely designed & even personalized as per requirements that helps student artists to explore even more.
