What is the NID Entrance Exam?

The NID Design Aptitude Test is a means through which aspirants are shortlisted for admission in UG - Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and PG - Master of Design (M.Des) design courses offered at the National Institute of Design (NID) campuses.

What Is The Eligibility Criteria?

For B.Des programmes:

  • Candidates should have completed their 10+2 examinations from any stream from a recognised board or university.

For the M.Des programme:

  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree of 4 years in any specialisation after the 12th grade or equivalent from any university.
  •  A full-time diploma of 4 years in Design/Applied Arts/Architecture after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard from any university.
  • Candidates with a minimum 3-year bachelor’s degree in any specialisation after 12th or equivalent from any university.

What Can You Expect In The NID Entrance Exam?

Admission to all the programmes at NID is based on performance in the Design Aptitude Test (DAT), split into Prelims and Mains. Prelims is used only for shortlisting; only Mains (Studio Test and Sensitivity Test) marks are counted for final admission criteria. Expect a higher cutoff, as fewer students will qualify for NID Mains this year.

Exam Breakdown (Updated for 2025-2026):

Stage 1: NID DAT Preliminary Written Examination

Assessment Areas: Creativity, drawing, imagination, problem-solving, design awareness, and general knowledge.

Format: Combination of objective (MCQ) and subjective (sketching, creative writing) questions.

Duration: 3 hours.

Prelim score is only for shortlisting.

Stage 2: NID DAT Mains (Studio + Sensitivity Test)

Includes: Model making, drawing, problem-solving, observation, storytelling, and design sensitivity.
Studio Test (60%), In-person Sensitivity Test (40%)

The NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims for the academic year 2025 is expected to take place in December 2024, and the NID DAT Mains will likely be held in April 2025. These dates are not official, so watch for updates. The tentative date to fill out the application form is September 2024, and the last date is December 2024.

NID DAT Prelims would be conducted in cities like Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Ranchi, Nagpur, Banglore, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada. You can choose your preferred location. On the other hand, the NID DAT Mains will be conducted on different NID campuses.

The NID has increased its fees for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program for the academic year 2024-25. The course fees include tuition fees, hostel charges, and other charges, rounded up to Rs. 2.12 lakhs per semester.
